Victory For Brazil In Food Safety
EurepGAP finally recognizes measures on feed and food safety as well as on social responsibility conveyed by the Good Manufacturing Practices program of SINDIRAÇÕES
November 9, 2006: São Paulo – SINDIRAÇÕES, the Brazilian Syndicate of the Animal Feed Industry, has just experienced a historical victory: the recognition of the Good Manufacturing Practices (GMP) program as the equivalent of the EurepGAP – the protocol of good agricultural practices of the European association of major food retailers responsible for the certification of farms which produce fruit, coffee, flowers, cattle, pigs, chickens, fish and food for animals. It is the only program worldwide to be recognized by Eurep, and the only one in Brazil with regards to food safety.
After more than a year of hard work and constant negotiation, Eurep (Euro-Retailer Produce Working Group) has recognized SINDIRAÇÕES’ safety measures. In order to assure a better alignment with the topics and trends of the international feed industry, the certification program has been completely renewed. It is now known as Feed & Food Safety – Management Program, and comprehends three stages: 1) GMP; 2) Hazard Analysis and Critical Control Point (HACCP); and 3) GMP EurepGAP – the one which allows access to the European market. The program of SINDIRAÇÕES provides support for different segments of the animal feed industry, such as producers of ingredients, premix, food for animals, supplements, additives, and pet food, among others.
“These options give companies the opportunity of being certified in a gradual and compatible way, according to their objectives and needs, so that they can do business with organizations interested in buying products for feeding the animals”, said the agronomy engineer Flávia de Castro, who is also the coordinator of the technical, quality and communication department of the Syndicate.
SINDIRAÇÕES is ahead of a productive sector which responds for approximately 1.8% of the Brazilian GDP, and generates more than US$ 9 billions per year. The animal feed sector itself exports about US$ 49.9 millions per year. And chances are these numbers should rise in the next few years. Due to the recognition of these measures on feed and food safety as well as on social responsibility by Eurep, Brazil will be able to maintain and value the access of its agricultural and processed products into the European community, one of the most important importer markets of meat and other goods for animals.
The requirements to obtain the certificates are to be described in the Feed & Food Safety – Management Program Manual, in the lists of verification to be applied by the certifying entities, and in the regiment of the chosen stage.
